Building a Life Together

Therapy for Young Couples

Building a life together can bring questions neither partner expected: whose family gets the holiday, how money is discussed or what closeness means. We help young couples slow down those conversations and hear the concerns underneath.

Who This Is For

Therapy can suit couples early in a relationship, engaged or newly married, or making shared decisions about daily life. You can care about each other and still find that small disagreements keep taking the same shape.

  • Early relationship expectations
  • Engaged or newly married couples
  • Shared plans and responsibilities
  • Questions about intimacy

Focus of Care

What We Work On

  • Communication

Words and reactions when a conversation becomes tense.

  • Conflict

Recurring disagreements and what each partner needs.

  • Money and Family

Expectations around spending, relatives and shared decisions.

  • Intimacy

Closeness, differences and conversations that feel difficult.

How We Work

We draw on relationship-focused methods, including EFT and Gottman-informed work. A recent disagreement gives us something specific to examine: what one person said, how the other heard it and what happened next. CBT skills can help with thoughts that intensify the exchange.

What Can Shift

Partners can practice naming a concern before it turns into another argument about who is right. We explore expectations rather than assuming agreement means the same thing to both people. A difficult conversation can still include care for each other.

What Sessions Look Like

In a 50-minute couples session, both partners can describe an exchange in their own words. We may slow down the point where one person withdraws or the other becomes more insistent.

We offer in-person sessions in San Diego and telehealth across California. Format and clinician availability are discussed before scheduling, along with the relationship questions you want to address.

Making Room for Couples Work

A free 15-minute phone consultation covers fit, format and financial questions. We can discuss insurance and superbills; coverage depends on your plan and service.

Fees in Brief

Individual, couples and family sessions are 50 minutes. We are in network with many plans and provide superbills for out-of-network benefits. Contact us for rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Couples Therapy Only for a Major Crisis?

No, expectations and recurring disagreements are enough to discuss. Couples early in a relationship can bring questions before a shared decision becomes harder.

Can We Discuss Money Without Financial Advice?

Yes, therapy can examine communication and expectations around money. The focus is your relationship, not investment or financial planning.

Do We Both Need the Same Goal?

It depends on what each person hopes to address. We make time to hear both perspectives and discuss a focus you can work on together.

How Does EFT Relate to Young Couples?

EFT looks at emotional needs and recurring relationship cycles. We can explain how that lens relates to a disagreement about closeness or expectations.
