Thoughts, Emotions and Skills

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A thought such as "I have already messed this up" can change how a workday or conversation feels. CBT gives us a way to examine that thought, the emotion around it and the response that follows.

Who This Is For

CBT can suit teens and adults who want to understand anxiety, mood or reactions to everyday stress. Joseph and Travis use this approach, with the focus shaped by the concern and the person in the session.

  • Anxious thoughts and overthinking
  • Mood and motivation concerns
  • Teen school pressures
  • Adult work and relationship stress

Focus of Care

What We Work On

  • Thought Patterns

Interpretations that make a difficult moment feel heavier.

  • Emotions

Feelings connected to a thought or recent event.

  • Responses

Actions, avoidance and what happens afterward.

  • New Skills

Practical responses to try in everyday situations.

How We Work

We draw on introspection, reframing of thoughts, and practicing new skills to manage emotions. Reframing means looking for a more complete interpretation, not forcing a cheerful one. Mindfulness or relationship-focused work can be combined with CBT when those perspectives fit.

What Can Shift

A missed deadline can be discussed without turning it into a judgment about your whole character. We examine the thought and practice another response. You do not need to feel positive about a difficult event to look at it differently.

What Sessions Look Like

A 50-minute session might begin with a recent anxious moment, then follow the thoughts, feelings and actions around it. We can practice a skill and discuss where it might be useful outside the appointment.

The practice offers in-person care in San Diego and telehealth across California. Travis provides weekday daytime and evening telehealth; Joseph offers office and video formats. Availability and method fit are part of the consultation.

Choosing CBT-Focused Care

We offer a free 15-minute phone consultation about goals and clinician availability. Insurance depends on your plan; superbills can support out-of-network benefit requests.

Fees in Brief

Individual, couples and family sessions are 50 minutes. We are in network with many plans and provide superbills for out-of-network benefits. Contact us for rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CBT Mean Replacing Every Negative Thought?

No, we examine whether a thought gives the full picture. A painful experience can remain painful while we discuss the interpretation around it.

Do Joseph and Travis Both Use CBT?

Yes, Joseph and Travis use CBT. Each combines it with other methods according to the concern.

Will Sessions Only Involve Worksheets?

No, conversation and practical skills are part of CBT work. A recent example can give us enough detail to examine a thought together.

Can CBT Be Combined With Mindfulness?

Yes, we draw on both when useful. Noticing a reaction can give us room to examine the thought before practicing a response.
