A Conversation Before Therapy

College Stress and Burnout

College stress can involve more than assignments. Young adults may be adjusting to independence, relationships and questions about who they want to become while trying to keep up with classes. Burnout describes feeling worn down; it does not by itself tell us whether anxiety or a mood concern is present.

School Is Part of a Larger Change

An unfinished assignment may sit alongside worry about a first job or living away from family. We can discuss how those demands overlap on an ordinary weekday. A session does not require you to choose between talking about school and the relationships affected by that pressure.

What Feeling Worn Down Looks Like

You may notice difficulty getting started, replaying a classroom conversation or feeling unable to enjoy time away from work. Those observations deserve context rather than a quick diagnosis. We ask about changes in routines, emotions and what has felt harder compared with your usual experience.

Thoughts and Skills in the Same Conversation

CBT can include introspection, reframing thoughts and practicing new skills to manage emotions. We might look at the thought that comes before putting off an assignment and the response afterward. Mindfulness practices can also help us examine how you relate to stress without treating college as only a productivity problem.

Identity and Relationships Matter Too

Moving toward independence can change conversations with parents, partners and friends. A young adult may want space to think about expectations without dismissing people they care about. Therapy can connect a disagreement about plans with the needs and choices you are trying to understand.

When to Reach Out

Stress that repeatedly interferes with rest, relationships or daily responsibilities is worth discussing. A consultation can include anxiety or mood questions without assuming a diagnosis from feeling exhausted. In an emergency, call or text 988 or call 911; a scheduled consultation is not immediate crisis care.

How We Can Help

Therapy for Young Adults serves ages 18 to 25 with concerns including college, independence, identity and relationships. Sessions last 50 minutes in San Diego or by telehealth while you are in California. A free 15-minute phone consultation can cover clinician fit and the pressure you want to talk about.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, feeling worn down does not establish depression. A clinician can discuss mood, context and the effect on your daily life.

Can I Discuss Family Pressure Alongside School?

Yes, family expectations can be part of individual therapy. We can examine one conversation and how it affects your choices or emotions.

Can I Attend Online While Away at College?

Yes, telehealth may be an option while you are located in California. We discuss availability, privacy and clinician fit before scheduling.

The unfinished assignment and the question of who you want to be can share space in a conversation, without either being dismissed.
